My little angel Aithne was a much wanted and much loved baby bump and Daddy and I were so looking forward to having you. I went into labour at just 24 weeks, you were in such a rush to come in to this world, they even gave me an epidural to try and slow down the labour but you were born weighing just 1 pound 10 ozs. The longest twenty minutes of my life was when you were taken to the other side of the delivery room and was surrounded by doctors, all trying to save you. I heard you groan... I will never forget that little cry. I never got to hold you then, they put you straight in to an incubator. We were kept updated while you were being worked on and photos of you were brought to us. Each time the doctors came in they assured us they were doing all they could but we should prepare for the worst or that if you did survive you could be brain damaged. We didn't mind, we just wanted you to live and would have loved you no matter what. The doctors finally came in dragging chairs with them and my heart almost stopped. We were told then that our little girl could not be saved. The special care unit team worked on you for nine hours but your lungs weren't strong enough and sadly you lost your fight to stay with us. I hate to think that for the short time you were here all you felt was pain from needles. You never felt me hold you or feel my tears on your face. You were christened and we got to hold you for the first time, both sets of your grandparents were there and they also got to hold their only grand daughter. In the short time you were alive my angel you were loved enough to last a lifetime.
The pain remains the same, we miss you so much little Aithne.
